Match preview - Scottish Cup 2nd round

Dryburgh Athletic v Harmony Row WFC

This weekend's match sees Dryburgh in Scottish Womens Cup 2nd round action. Our girls were in top form in their last game before the Christmas break, with a strong 10-1 win against Grampian in the league, including hat tricks from Hope Ramage and Stacey McFadyen.

Their Cup opponents are Harmony Row, who are based in the south west of Glasgow and who have had a successful end to their season in the West/South West SWFL.  Their season has now finished, with their most recent games being wins against Mid Annandale, Clark Drive and Stewarton United which helped give them a 4th place finish in the league.  Meanwhile, in November they dispatched north Glasgow team West Park United in the Cup first round, with a 5-1 win. (As a Championship team, Dryburgh received a bye into the second round.)

The women's team are part of a very large community club, with a very interesting history.  Harmony Row was started in 1915 just after the start of the First World War as an attempt to provide sports and leisure support to local children whose fathers were serving in World War 1, with the original youth club situated on a street called Harmony Row in Govan. Over the years, the football club made use of various sports fields in Govan, using small scraps of land or local parks, including an area known as "Fifty Pitches", which was a vast swathe of fifty black ash football fields, which were always crowded. Before the advent of 3G, "ash" pitches were very common in the west of Scotland; they were the predecessor to 3G, but without any pretence of it being fake grass, and were more or less solid to land on.

In recent years, the club's Patron Sir Alex Ferguson CBE, having campaigned with others for fifteen years to create a new facility for the club, opened a new complex at Braehead, at the edge of Glasgow's south west boundary. The club has over 400 people either participating or volunteering within it, across a wide range of sports and activities.

Everyone at Dryburgh is looking forward to playing our Cup game this Sunday against a team that is steeped in history and so rooted in its local community.  The game has had a change of venue and is now at the Regional Performance Centre, Caird Park with a 12.30pm kick off.  Spectators are welcome from 12 noon, £2 admission for adults and children free.  The winners of the tie will play SWPL2 side Kilmarnock WFC on 16th January.

Come along and cheer on the teams!
