SWF Championship Cup Match report
Falkirk 1 Dryburgh Athletic 4
This pulsating Championship Cup quarter final saw a well-drilled Dryburgh side ease past their hosts in an entertaining match at the Falkirk Stadium.
Dryburgh were rattled with the game only a few minutes old when a Falkirk free kick from the edge of the box hit the bar, but soon after at the other end Rachel Robbie tried her luck from 25 metres but it too rattled off the bar and was cleared.
‘Burgh were really starting to press constantly and soon after, Zoe Moreland couldn’t quite connect with a half chance, while further chances from Alma Codegoni, Stacey McFadyen and Hope Ramage all came agonisingly close. At the other end, it took until the half hour mark for the first real threat on Chantelle McKay’s goal, but the keeper saved comfortably.
The breakthrough goal finally came after 37 minutes from down the left, with the electric pace of McFadyen finding space to cross over to Megan Robb, who picked her spot to give the visitors the lead.
The second half saw a resurgent Falkirk pick up the pace and press the Dryburgh defence, and a stray ball was pounced on and converted for the equaliser. ‘Burgh responded well though, and on the hour mark a cross into the box from the left found Codegoni in space who tapped the ball into the goal to deservedly retake the lead for the visitors. Ten minutes later, after some strong tackles and high pressing, the ball landed kindly for Beth Collins who made no mistake with her finish.
Falkirk were still a threat at this stage and trying to breach the back line, but resolute Dryburgh defending meant they had very little to show for their efforts.
Towards the end the game had almost fizzled out, but some great interplay between Chloe Robertson and Collins led to a dangerous ball into the box, and McFadyen managed to steal the ball and poke it over the line to complete the scoring at 4-1.
So once again, Dryburgh put in an excellent shift today against hard working opponents, with strength in all areas of the park giving them the win. The Championship Cup started out 2 months ago with 27 teams, and to their massive credit Dryburgh will be in the semi final draw tomorrow - what a team!
