Morton await Dryburgh challenge

SWF Championship Match preview

Sunday 25th September

Greenock Morton v Dryburgh Athletic

This Sunday sees Dryburgh Women head west to Port Glasgow on the banks of the Clyde to play against Morton Women. It’s another long trip for ‘Burgh - around 2 hours - but they go into the game with a lot of confidence after last week’s performance against Inverness.

That game was an excellent advert for women’s football, with plenty excitement for the fans but also some strong play from throughout the Dryburgh team. Although a late penalty gave the visitors the 3 points, ‘Burgh had most of the possession and had a number of chances, with Megan Robb bagging 2 goals. Also pleasing was the entry of Dryburgh graduate Sophie Hunt into the team for the first time, as well as new signing Derrian Gollan, both of whom give the coaching team some extra options in the forward line.

This will actually be the second time Dryburgh have met Sunday’s opponents, with the first seeing Morton edge the SWFL Div 2 League Cup final 3-2 AET at Ainslie Park in 2019.

5 Dryburgh players from that day are still in the current Championship squad.

Morton have had mixed fortunes of late. Despite recent losses to Renfrew and Hutchison Vale, they edged a 2-1 win against Inverness 3 weeks ago, and just like Dryburgh, most of this season’s games so far have been very close affairs. There’s no doubt that this Sunday’s game will be tight with lots of good football to look forward to.

For anyone wanting to head to Port Glasgow, seats are available on the supporters bus, please contact dryburghgirls@gmail.com for more info.

The game kicks off at 2pm at Parklea Stadium, Port Glasgow. We look forward to seeing our supporters there to cheer on the ‘Burgh!
